I've blogged previously about the fundamental role that top-notch poetry journals can play in drawing our attention to new names and keeping us up with more established writers' recent work. Perhaps one of the most consistent over-achievers in this respect is The Next Review, and its latest issue is no exception.

On finally finding time to sit down and read through it, five poems by Jamie Baxter leapt off the page. They were keenly observed, measured, restrained yet packed with emotional charge. I googled him, of course, and encountered further excellent examples of his verse at The Literateur (see link here).  Another poet to follow and another reminder of why I value my magazine subscriptions so much!

I'm delighted to report that I've got four poems in the May/June 2015 (Vol 2, Nº5) issue of The Next Review. What's more, it seems I've even made the cover!

Two new poetry pamphlet publishers

I was delighted to discover not one but two new poetry pamphlet publishers this week!

First off, Sphinx featured an excellent interview with Mike Barlow from Wayleave Press, and you can also visit their website here to get a flavour of what they're producing.

The Next Review, meanwhile, have been one of the most recent exciting additions to the print-based magazine scene in the U.K., and they've just announced the publication of their first batch of chapbooks from Gareth Jones, Don Russ and Jo Robinson, all decked out in their inimitable house style.

I'm very much looking forward to getting my hands on pamphlets from both these new ventures.

The Next Review

I'm now back in deepest Extremadura, having met some terrific people in Shrewbury and Oxford. Over thirty of my pamphlets flew into the hands of new readers, but their weight in my rucksack was replaced by numerous books and mags to be devoured over the coming weeks.

Chief among my new possessions is my contributor's copy of The Next Review Vol.2/No.1:

The Next Review (see website here) is a relatively new print-based magazine. This issue features a wide range of poetry and reviews, but I'd especially highlight Richie McCaffery's verse and an interview with Don Paterson.

There certainly seems to be something of a nod towards Ian Hamilton's The New Review in that title and in much of the contents. I'll be following its development with great interest.
